On Assignment – Never say Never

2009 November 20

Serendib Magazine Maldives Beyond the Lens

I have been producing content for Sri Lankan Airlines Magazine, Serendib for three years. In that time I have produced over 25 feature length articles and had countless photos published. I saw the November/December 2009 issue online today and grabbed these screen shots of the latest article of mine that has been published.

Titled ‘Beyond the Lens in the Maldives’, the article recounts some of the more interesting things that often happen when on assignment, yet which no one ever finds out about.

I think my all time favourite was running out of fuel on a speed boat transfer in the largest atoll in the country.

Not only did we all have a plane to meet (the only plane scheduled for that day!), I had a tight deadline to meet and the only way I would make it was if I made that plane ride back to the capital, Male’ and got myself an internet connection.

With the pressure on, my Maldivian colleagues pulled us through. Someone in our group new someone at the coast guard (it’s a small country) and a couple of phone calls later, we were picked up and whisked off to the airport. As for the plane, that was held on the tarmac for an extra 45-minutes, just for us! I couldn’t believe it.

It was a true lesson in never say never.
