Now I am the first to admit, I am not exactly a big city guy. Give me the choice of an island in the Pacific and a mega-city like Bangkok, and I’ll take the island option hands down.

Having said that, cities do hold a particular fascination for me. Particularly cities with really amazing skyscrapers.

All of which brings me to the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. When friends and colleagues found out I was going to KL, nearly everyone said ‘make sure you check out the Twin Towers’.

And sure enough, I did. Mind you, the Towers are pretty hard to avoid – you can see them from just about everywhere in KL. Standing beneath the Towers and looking straight up is an amazing sight.

At first glance, Male’ may seem to be a bit drab in comparison to the nearby resort islands, but if you take some time and get lost in the maze of streets, you’ll soon realise that Male’ is a unique and interesting city.

The four page piece is below. Unfortunately I didn’t get the opening photo, which is why it is blurred out below. Thanks to the creative team that puts the magazine together each year and continues to publish my work.

Portrait of a woman, Hanoi, Vietnam.

Our last day in Vietnam was spent cruising the streets of Hanoi and catching up with friends.

What always strikes me about Hanoi is how hip the younger generation is. It is such a contrast to the people you come across out in the rural areas of Vietnam. It almost feels like a generational time warp.

We had lunch with this lady and I knew as soon as I met her that I wanted to take her portrait. She seemed to sum up the younger generation of Hanoi, which I’m referring to – young, confident and hip.

This ends my series of posts about my 14 day trip in Vietnam. Next up, the Cook Islands and my new home.

I love wandering around new locations with my cameras, meeting new people and discovering what makes a place tick. KL was no different and despite the mid-afternoon monsoon downpours, I still managed to put together a good selection of travel photographs of Kuala Lumpur.

Photograph from a walk I did around Kuala Lumpur last night, taking night shots.

I covered the iconic Petronas Twin Towers on my first night, so I was looking for the aesthetic, but not often photographed parts of KL.

The Convention Centre near the Twin Towers – which were right behind me – is just one example of a building you just don’t see photographs of.

While I never got into photography for building architecture, I must admit that I enjoy rounding out my photographic coverage of an area by finding the most aesthetic and interesting buildings to photograph.

Today was portrait day for me.

A day where I went out into a foreign city, filled with people and tried to find interesting people, in aesthetic settings with good light. You need all three to produce good travel portraits, and honestly, it is harder to find than you may think.

Of course, you need one last thing too – the person in question to agree to your portrait request.

A lot of people said no to me today, but four individuals said yes.
