In September 2006 I spent three weeks travelling in northern India. During this time I ended up travelling from Manali to Leh, a two day trip by jeep or bus. The road from Manali to Leh was one of those trips within a trip. Half way through the first day, I realised that there was a story to photograph.

Open during the short summer months, the road winds 475 km from Manali to Leh. The road crosses a number of passes, some topping 4,000 metres. I remember having a crushing altitude headache on the first night with a total loss of appetite. Needless to say, I was pretty happy to descend to a lower altitude the next day.

The road winds through some pretty stunning desert mountain scenery. Aurora Photos recently ran an editorial feature on the road, which of course is available for licensing. Hit the link to see more photos.

A friendly, some what laid back town, Chiang Mai has a thriving tourism industry - white water rafting, elephant rides, hill tribe trekking, the list goes on – as well as a small river running through the middle of town. The river is the best place to be at the end of the day to watch the sun go down, see the lanterns come on and enjoy an evening meal.

This photo was taken in early 2004 at the end of my third summer season working in Antarctica.

We were returning from a 7-week stint in the Northern Prince Charles Mountains, the remotest and emptiest place I have ever been. The fact that we spent the entire time living in the field (read: camping), only magnified the experience. The flight back to our station took 3-hours, with a refueling stop at the Samson Island fuel dump. Fuel dump in Antarctica means one thing: a place with loads and loads of 44-gallon drums of Jet A1 fuel, all lashed down some how.

As you can see from the photo, it was one of those incredible postcard perfect days.
