PORTRAITURE: WORKERS | MALDIVES

Portraits of six of the one hundred and ninety workers from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal working on the tiny Kudahuvadhoo Island in the Maldives during the post-tsunami rebuilding program.

Employed as bonded labour, each man works six days a week, from 0730 in the morning until 2230 at night with two 30-minute breaks for morning and afternoon tea and 60-minutes for lunch.

Despite the workers skills and being contracted to work for a major aid organisation (International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies - IFRC), each worker is paid approximately $150 USD per month or $0.48 USD per hour.
