From the Archive: Tsunami Line, Maldives
Taken in March 2006, this is a photo of the outside wall of a home on Madifushi Island, in the Maldives. The house is built out of coral. The Boxing Day tsnuami of 2004 swept across Madifushi Island, destroying homes and causing mayhem.
Some 15-months later, the evidence of the tsunami still existed in destroyed homes and lines on building walls, like in this photo. The dark shading on the lower part of the coral wall was caused by water rushing across the island.
When you consider the height of the line and the fact this house was nearly in the middle of the island, it is a pretty sobering thought thinking about how much force was required to displace that much water across the surface of the ocean.
